The prophecy of the end of the world is a belief that is based on the interpretation of some sacred or ancient texts, which supposedly predict the end of human history and the beginning of a new era. There are many versions and sources of this prophecy, varying by culture, religion, and time. Some of the best known are the Mayan prophecy, the prophecy of Nostradamus, the biblical prophecy of the Apocalypse and the Aztec prophecy of Armageddon. Mayan prophecy is based on the calendar of this ancient civilization, which is divided into cycles of 5,125 years called baktuns. According to some scholars, the last baktun ended on December 21, 2012, which would mean the end of one era and the beginning of another. However, other experts claim that the Mayan calendar does not have an end, but rather repeats indefinitely, and that there is no evidence that the Mayans predicted the end of the world. The Nostradamus prophecy is based on quatrains written by this 16th-century French doctor and astrologer, which supposedly contain predictions about the future. Some believe Nostradamus anticipated events such as the world wars, the rise of Hitler, the 9/11 attacks, and the coronavirus. Others think that his verses are ambiguous and can be interpreted in many ways, and that there is no evidence that Nostradamus had prophetic powers. The biblical prophecy of Revelation is based on the last book of the New Testament, which is attributed to the apostle Saint John. This book describes in detail the events that would surround the end of the world, such as the appearance of the Antichrist, plagues, wars, the Last Judgment and the establishment of the kingdom of God. Some Christians believe that these prophecies will be literally fulfilled, and that there are signs indicating that the end is near. Other Christians consider these prophecies to be symbolic, reflecting the struggle between good and evil, and the hope of salvation. The Aztec prophecy of Armageddon is based on the cosmogony of this ancient civilization, which believed that the world had passed through five suns or ages, each of which ended in catastrophe. According to the Aztecs, the fifth sun, the current one, would end with a great earthquake, which would destroy the enemies of its people and give way to a new sun and a new world. The Aztecs hoped that the gods would help them survive the cataclysm, and that the children of the corn, the descendants of the Aztecs faithful to their faith and tradition, would be in charge of repopulating the earth. These are some of the doomsday prophecies that exist, but there are many more. Some people take them seriously, and others see them as simple myths or fantasies. The truth is that none of these prophecies have been confirmed by science or history, and that the future of humanity depends more on our actions than on our omens.
